Farmer Sprite System FAQ

I've prepared a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) to hopefully answer some general questions and concerns. Please read before commenting. Thank you!

------------

Question - Can I use this with RPG Maker?

Short answer - No.

Long answer - Not without some heavy image editing on your part, plugins to make longer/shorter animations work, or both. The walk and run cycle are both six frames. There are no designated battler animations. The cell size for the character is 64x64. It's technically possible to use this with RPG Maker, just know you're in for a rough time. You may be better off seeking out assets that are made with RM in mind.

Question - How is this different from your old Character Base?

Answer - The Farmer Sprite System is an evolution of the old Character Base. It looks similar because it began as a modest revision of the older asset, but I ended up improving and adding so much that it became necessary to build an entirely new framework for the changes. Where the old Character Base is admittedly kind of an unfocused mish-mash of different ideas, the Farmer Sprite System has been designed to focus strictly on slice-of-life or farming sim-style games. The new Farmer Sprite System takes everything from the Character Base that was good for farming sims and cuts out everything else. Duplicate and mirrored frames have been removed (to simplify future updates). I got rid of all the complex combat stuff you don't need in a farming sim (while retaining basic attacks that can borrow frames from farming actions). More animations now fit in a smaller space by better utilizing versatile frames across multiple animations. Everything is on a single large sprite sheet (as opposed to the 13 smaller sheets that complicate the old Character Base). A unified swappable color palette makes multiple color-swapped sheets unnecessary (optimizing your game and making future additions much more likely). Outfits can now be made from separate articles of clothing rather than full outfit sprites. And I've just made a ton of general artistic improvements across the board. If you're making a farming sim-style game, this system should be everything you'll ever need. If you're not too invested in the old Character Base, and you're making a laid-back farming sim-style game, then I recommend switching completely to the new system.

Question - But I like the combat animations from the Character Base, and need them for my epic action RPG. Will you eventually add more combat stuff to the Farmer Sprite System?

Answer - Not likely. This whole system was designed from the ground up to be used in slice-of-life farming sim-style games, NOT epic action RPGs. Trying to accommodate both game types was a stumbling block for me with the old Character Base. This Farmer Sprite doesn't have the body language of an epic fantasy hero, and I would discourage you from trying to use it for that. If anything, you can use this for your game's NPCs, but not the heroic player characters. I have plans to release a separate player sprite designed explicitly for epic action RPGs. I've been calling it the Hero Base (in the Mana Seed Discord and Patreon), and I've shared early previews of it with supporters already. It's in the works. That eventual asset will have the strong, confident body language of a fantasy hero, and come with a ton of combat animations for a variety of weapons and special abilities. What it won't have is all the farming animations, wholesome emotes, and various clothing layers found in the Farmer Sprite System. Two different game types, two different products, no cross-compatibility. I'm sorry I don't have a suitable heroic character sprite for you just yet, but hopefully, it'll be ready next year. If you need the combat stuff in the old Character Base that hasn't been carried over to the Farmer Sprite System, then you're best off just sticking with the Character Base for now.

Question - Will you be adding more animations, clothing, and hairstyles to the Farmer Sprite System in future updates?

Answer - Yes, most likely... but it won't be right away, and I don't have any concrete plans. My goal with the Farmer Sprite System was to create a farming game player sprite that I would enjoy adding more content to in the future (since the state of the old Character Base had sapped my will to ever work on it again). And I've accomplished that with flying colors. I love what I have here, and I'm pumped to add more stuff to it. That being said, I've been working on this thing for a whole year and I need a break, lol! When the planned content is finished, I'll be creating a rideable horse (an absolute necessity for any farming game). After that, I may add something to the Farmer Sprite, or I may work on something else. We'll see. I do have more animations in mind (I want to fill the empty space on the sheet someday), as well as a bunch of hairstyles and clothing parts. But I can't make any promises about when any of that will happen. If you want to have a say in it, I sometimes run polls on Patreon to see what my supporters want me to work on 🤷‍♀️

------------

Question - Will there be 3rd-party add-ons for the Farmer Sprite System like there was for your Character Base?

Answer - Yes, I hope so! I know of two projects in the works already, and I expect there will soon be more. I want other artists to make things like clothing and hairstyle layers and sell them separately. I have included a text file ("Selling Mana Seed Compatible Assets.txt") that outlines the requirements and suggestions for such outfits. If you have an interest in this, please let me know!
